Chapter Eight

THE CARRIAGE LURCHES to a stop, startling me awake.

“Adriana.” Keldrin touches my shoulder.

I turn around to look at his face, which is directly above mine. The air in the carriage thins. My heart races and my cheeks flush as though I’m having another reaction to Savior Blood and Warrior. Something about this position makes me unable to maintain a cool head.

For a moment, he seems to be transfixed by my blushing face.

“Keldrin, let’s go.” Razen’s voice pulls Keldrin from his reverie.

Keldrin clears his throat and holds a hand out to me. With his help, I stand up from the bench and jump off the carriage.

We’re in the middle of a small village. The sun has set, and dim lights shine through the windows of small cottages from meager flames of candles. We enter a small tavern that smells of alcohol and vomit. A few men sit at some of the wooden tables, enjoying their dishes and drink.

“Dinners and rooms for four, please,” Keldrin says to a bald man behind a counter.

“We only have two rooms left, Sir,” the bald man says.

“Fine. We’ll take them.”

It’s not like we have any other choice. This tavern might be the only one in the village.

We eat a meal of hard bread and soup that doesn’t taste nearly as good as the meals at the mage academy. Keldrin gives the smaller of the two rooms to me while he, Razen, and Xander share the room next door. My room is tiny and bare, except for a bed and a table with chairs. In the candlelight, I can make out the grease on the worn furniture.

I call for a tub of hot water and a heavy woman brings in a basin of lukewarm water. I was hoping I could sink my aching body into a satisfying bath, but I guess I can’t be picky this far away from home.

I clean myself before I lie down on the bed.

Perhaps because I took an afternoon nap, or because the bed is as hard as a rock, I toss and turn, unable to fall asleep.

In the dead of the night, the thin walls can’t keep out all the noises, especially from my superior hearing. My face burns as I listen to the moans and cries from the room to my left. I don’t think the people next door know their every sound is not contained within the walls.

Soon, the conversation from the room to my right takes my attention.

I have to concentrate to hear what the trio is saying, because, although they’re not whispering, their voices are low.

“You want the Enchanter’s Stone to free Adriana from Aldric,” Razen says rather than asks. “That might be a mistake.”

“What do you mean?” Keldrin asks.

“There’s something about her that sets off an alarm. The stone on her staff is so impure that no mage should be able to use it. That day, when I pushed her off a building, I thought I saw something on her back. And her magic felt weird and familiar at the same time.
